Mona Lisa in the Style of Picasso, after Leonardo da Vinci.

The sitter is taken apart and put back together the way Picasso rebuilt the women of his own portraits: the face split down its axis, one eye in calm profile and one staring straight out of a lilac mask, the hands reassembled from folded planes of ochre and bone. Behind her Leonardo's valley survives, flattened into facets — a cubist reading of the atmospheric haze he invented. A green bodice, a vermilion drape and one wedge of cobalt hold the picture together where the anatomy will not. Painted in oil on a solid ash panel at the original's own size, 76.3 × 53 cm, built up in layers the way Leonardo built his — he worked on poplar. Made to order, after Leonardo da Vinci.
